The exemption ended for new cars

If someone tells you EVs pay no VED, they are quoting a rule that stopped for new registrations on 1 April 2025.

First payment at registration for 0g/km is £10. From the second year the standard rate is £200. If the published list price is over £50,000, add £440 a year for five years from the second tax payment.

Questions

Are older EVs still free?

Cars registered before 1 April 2025 keep the older zero-emission treatment for the expensive-car supplement rules. Check the table for your registration date.
